Hoggle Expected in Court Friday

Catherine Hoggle, who faces two murder charges for the disappearance of her two young children, is scheduled to be in court again Friday. Once again, the issue will be whether she is competent to stand trial.
She will be appearing before Circuit Court Judge Robert Greenberg. The case had been before Judge Michael Mason; the case has been moved because of Mason’s retirement.
Four years ago, Hoggle and her children — then 3-year-old Sarah and then 2-year-old Jacob — were reported missing. Two days later, someone called 911 to say she was walking along Century Boulevard and Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown, but there was no sign of her children.
Police charged Hoggle, 32, with neglect. She had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was held without bail and sent to Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup, where doctors ruled her not competent to stand trial. The ruling has been reviewed periodically since.
Fourteen months ago, State’s Attorney John McCarthy charged Hoggle with two counts of murder, one for each child.
If Hoggle is deemed to be competent, the State’s Attorney’s Office is prepared to go forward with prosecuting her, spokesman Ramon Korionoff said.
If there’s no change in Hoggle’s status, Judge Greenberg could order another competency evaluation, according to her attorney, David Felsen.
