5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 11, In Montgomery County

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 11, and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Heat Emergency Alert: Montgomery County is under a Heat Emergency Alert from noon today until 8 p.m. Thursday. The county issues the alert when heat index is forecast to be at least 105 degrees. Nighttime temperatures can still be dangerous after extended exposure.

The county tells residents to take precautions like: drink plenty of water, avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, and wear proper protection like light-colored clothing and sunscreen if you must be exposed to the sun.

2. County Media Briefing: County Executive Marc Elrich, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles and Acting Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Earl Stoddard will hold their weekly media briefing at 12:30 p.m. You can watch live on MCM channels 21 and 995 (HD), County Cable Montgomery and on the county’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

3. Drive-Thru Food Distribution: Stop by South Lake Elementary School in Gaithersburg from 1-2:30 p.m. to receive boxed groceries in your car.

4. Outdoor Nature Discovery: Bring your child to Outdoor Nature Discovery with Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL). The session meets outside the Aspen Hill Library at 10:15 a.m. to discover the natural world. MCPL says the program is perfect for first-third graders.

5. Redistricting Commission Meeting: The County Council’s Commission on Redistricting will meet on Zoom from 5-6:30 p.m. It will be livestreamed on the council’s Facebook page.
