Ida Pearl Green turned 103 years young on June 18.

To put 103 years in perspective, Green has been around for two World Wars, two pandemics and seven cycles of the Brood X cicadas.

The North Potomac resident celebrated with a drive-by birthday car parade at Fairhaven United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg. Green’s family and friends came by to show their love on her special day.

“I’m feeling wonderful today,” Green said. “So glad to be alive and out in the beautiful sunlight.”

Her family also organized a car parade for her 102nd birthday last year, a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic. Green is happy to be celebrating again as life shifts closer to normalcy.

“How wonderful it is, to be alive, and that you can walk and talk with people,” Green said.

To others who want to lead a long and happy life, she advises: “Just be friendly. Greet everybody with a smile.”
