WSSC Extends Closing of Brown’s Bridge Recreation Area

wssc3As a precaution, WSSC is extending the closure of the Brown’s Bridge Recreation Area until September 11th. This decision follows the most recent break of a 20-inch pressurized sewer main that occurred on August 12th in Olney and the resulting sewage spill.

According to WSSC, the sewage spill was primarily contained to grassy areas with minimal impact to area waterways.

Additionally, WSSC officials said contractors pumped additional sewage from the affected areas reducing the total overflow volume for the spill to 270,791 gallons.

To get the word out about the closure, signs are posted at WSSC’s Brown’s Bridge Recreation Area notifying passersby that the recreation area is closed. Sanitary Sewer Overflow signs are also posted along the following roads in the affected area: Maryland Route 108, New Hampshire Avenue, Mink Hollow Road, Chandlee Mill Road, Haviland Mill Road and Pyrite Lane. WSSC also posted warning signs around Lake Hallowell.
