Worst Days for Travel During July 4th Holiday Weekend

If you have plans to get away for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, you will not be alone in your travels.

The auto club, AAA Mid-Atlantic, is projecting a record number of Washington area residents to travel during the long 4th of July holiday weekend.  AAA predicts 48.9 million Americans, including 1.2 million Washington area residents will travel 50 miles or more away from home.

The majority of travelers, 87 percent, will take to the roads. Public safety officials are urging drivers to use caution and to expect delays on the road. Holiday traffic is expected to be at its worse during the morning hours Sunday, July 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as travelers head home at the end of the long weekend.

Homeward bound travelers from the long holiday weekend will encounter travel delays swelling to 2.4 times a normal trip along local roadways “on any given Sunday.”

AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2000.
