Wootton High Student Wins Visual Arts Award (Photo)
Meet Gauyun ‘Esther’ Kim.The 18-year-old teen is highly driven in the arts field and was recently awarded by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC). The Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, given to Kim, was created about 16 years ago by the family of the late Haimovicz. Haimovicz was 64 when she grew an appreciation for clay making. However, as the North Bethesda native became older, the weight of the clay was too heavy to withstand, according to her son Joseph Hamer.
The goal of the award is to support Montgomery County high school seniors who want to pursue a career in visual arts early on in life.
Kim, a recent graduate from Thomas S. Wooton High School and the Visual Art Center at Albert Einstein High School, will be continuing her passion for the arts at the Rhode Island School of Design in the fall.
She was awarded $3000 along with a solo exhibition at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building from June 10 through June 28.
Kim was one of two students awarded this year by the arts and humanities council. The Fran Abrams Creative Writing Award, is another award given by the AHCMC. This year’s award recognizes the written work of Sydney Axelrod.
