Richard Montgomery Student Wins Arts Award
When Sydney Axelrod heads to Drexel University in the fall to study communications, she will know the support of her hometown is behind her.
The 18-year-old teen’s writing was recently awarded by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC).
The Fran Abrams Creative Writing Award, presented to Axelrod, honors Fran Abrams a dedicated supporter of the arts in Montgomery County.
Created about a decade ago, the award recognizes Abrams’ 40 years of service to Montgomery County which included working with the county government, various nonprofits and AHCMC.
Axelrod was awarded $1000 along with a reading at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building.
She was one of two students awarded in 2013 by the arts and humanities council. The Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, is another award given by the AHCMC. This year’s award recognizes the artistic work of Gauyun ‘Esther’ Kim.

Fran Abrams has not left the building. I am alive and well and pictured standing on the right side of the photo. This award was created to honor me on the occasion of my retirement in 2010. I deeply appreciate that honor and am thrilled to be around to meet the deserving recipients of the award, including Sydney.
