Women’s History Month: MCM Spotlights Nancy Navarro
In honor of Women’s History Month, MCM is recognizing some of Montgomery County’s most notable women. Women who have driven change, fought for equality and provided representation for the many diverse parts of our community. Montgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro is one notable figure who has contributed to the community in many ways.
Navarro was born in Caracas, Venezuela. After moving to the U.S., she attended the University of Missouri and received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She has been a resident of Montgomery County for more than 20 years and has left her mark on the community.
Navarro is the first Latina elected to serve on the Montgomery County Council. She was elected council president in 2013 and is currently the only woman on the council. In 2011, she was appointed by then-President Barrack Obama to be a member of the President’s Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Navarro also took part in establishing the Latino Civic Project which is a program that encourages minority residents to engage and participate in civics.
Before serving on the council, Navarro served two terms as President on the Montgomery County Board of Education. While there, she created a language assistance service that provided translation and interpretation services for families and schools. Navarro also participated in the Public Education Leadership Project at Harvard University, where her team focused on race, poverty, and the achievement gap in Montgomery County Public Schools.
Navarro has received many awards and recognitions including the Maryland State Department of Education’s Women Who Dare Leadership award. She was also named the 2009 and 2013 recipient of Maryland’s Top 100 Women award.
She is recognized by the Montgomery County community for her work and dedication to improving the community.
