Wheaton Revitalization Project Reaches Halfway Point
The Wheaton Revitalization is underway and has reached its halfway point. It is scheduled to be complete by May 2020.
The project, which started in June 2017, will transform Wheaton’s old central business district to include a new 14-story Montgomery County Government office building. A new town square will be located outside of the building.

The building will be the tallest building in all of Montgomery County, located between Veirs Mill Road and Georgia Avenue. It will mainly be home to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
The infrastructure for the building, as well as four levels of below ground parking, is now complete. Monday afternoon, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MDOT) Director Al Roshdieh, and other county officials toured the construction zone.
After the tour, there was a press conference, where the officials thanked the Clark Construction team. The team has been hard at work for almost 17 months.
This project has been a major goal for Leggett, who’s leaving office in December, as his third term as county executive comes to an end.
“This is more than about construction,” said Leggett. “It’s about delivering on a promise to a neighborhood and community well forgotten for far too long, and all these workers here are making sure that we deliver on that promise.”
Leggett acknowledged that Wheaton residents have felt left out when it comes to innovation in the county–especially after the work that has been done to improve Silver Spring, White Flint, Bethesda, and Shady Grove.
“All of those projects were able to move forward,” said County Executive Leggett. “But for some reason we were unable to move this project [in Wheaton] forward sooner.”

As Leggett leaves office, Councilmember Nancy Navarro, who represents Wheaton promised to continue making progress on the project.
“I will be staying on for four more years and this project is on the top of my agenda, as it has been from the very beginning, when I started representing Wheaton in 2011,” said Navarro.
In July 2019, the project will enter its next phase in the Wheaton Revitalization Project where the building will receive it’s concrete structure. In addition to this project, Leggett said that the county is working on completing a new recreation center and library in Wheaton.
