Here are some of our picks for arts and entertainment this weekend:
Art:
- Strathmore Mansion’s current exhibition, Drawing for Art, is on display from now through June 6. This exhibit has a twist, buy a ticket for a drawing on June 6 and go home with an original piece of artwork.
- The Rockville Art League Juried Members’ Show is on exhibit at Glenview Mansion from now through June 28.
- Gallery B’s “May Daze and Abstract Nights” exhibit runs through May 27. The exhibit features the works of artists from Be Dot Gallery.
- BlackRock Center for the Arts hosts two exhibits this month. In the Kay Gallery works by Mike McConnell are on display through June 10. Alexandra Chiou’s mixed-media paintings are on display in the Terrace Gallery through June 3.
- The Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association presents a collection of multimedia works at Kentlands Mansion through July 7. This is a juried exhibition.
- The “Modern Surrealists” exhibit is on display at the Arts Barn Gallery now through July 4 and features the works of Marco Cuba-Ricsi, John Duke and Thomas Germer.
- Waverly Street Gallery’s current exhibit, Textures in Glass, is on display through June 3. The artist, Jill Tanenbaum, will be at the gallery Saturday, May 27 from 1 to 3 p.m.
- The Glen Echo Park Partnership operates three galleries with ongoing art exhibits. Find more information about their schedule by visiting the website, here. During the months of May through September, Glen Echo hosts Art Walk on the first Friday of the month with open studios and demonstrations throughout the park. Each month the event features different activities. The next Art Walk is scheduled for June 2.
Family:
- Montgomery County outdoor pools open Saturday, May 27 at noon. The Gaithersburg Water Park at Bohrer Park and the outdoor pools at Rockville Swim Center also open Saturday. The outdoor pools will be open on weekends and Memorial Day until June 16, the last day of school for MCPS students. At that time, they will also be open weekdays.
- The opening ceremony for Flags for Our Heroes takes place at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm in Gaithersburg, Saturday, May 27 at 11 a.m. This annual display of 750 American flags honors community heroes, both past and present.
- Rockville’s Hometown Holidays return with a music festival and Taste of Rockville Saturday and Sunday. Check out the schedule of live music on the four stages and this list of participating restaurants.
- Rockville will hold their 73rd annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade Monday, May 29 at the Rockville Town Center.
- The city of Gaithersburg will hold their annual Memorial Day Observance on Tuesday, May 30 at Christman Park. Donations to support homeless veterans in Montgomery County are requested.
- The Dixieland Express will perform at the Howard Avenue Park, across from the Kensington Train Station Saturday, May 27 from 10 to 11 a.m.
- Zumba in the Park features an hour of high energy fun at the City Hall Concert Pavilion in Gaithersburg at 7 p.m. Friday evenings now through August 25. All ages are welcome.
- The Puppet Co. Playhouse production of Cinderella continues through June 11 at Glen Echo Park.
- Imagination Stage’s production of The Jungle Book continues in Bethesda through May 28.
- Brookside Garden’s live butterfly and caterpillar exhibit, Wings of Fancy, runs now through Sept. 17. The exhibit will be closed during extreme heat, as the greenhouse is usually ten degrees warmer than outside temperatures.
- There are only two more family jazz sessions for 3 to 8-year-olds at Strathmore scheduled this season. The June 3rd session focuses on the blues, while the June 17th session is all about legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald.
- Coming up: Imagination Stage’s Summer Sunday Fun-days begin July 9. The workshops are designed for 1 to 5 year-olds and include dramatic play, movement, music and visual art based on a popular children’s book.
- Coming up: Adventure Theatre’s production of Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook runs from June 23 to August 14.
Theater & Film:
- Olney Theatre’s production of Proof runs now through June 18.
- Montgomery Playhouse’s production of the comedy An American Daughter continues at Gaithersburg Arts Barn through Sunday, May 28.
- Silver Spring Stage’s production of Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson continues through Sunday, May 28. The play is based on the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt.
- Coming up: Montgomery College’s Monday Night Film Series returns June 5 with The Bad Sleep Well. All the films in this series explore the 1960’s and are free and open to the public. Films are shown at the Parilla Performing Arts Center on the Rockville Campus.
- Coming up: The British Players present the murder mystery musical, Something’s Afoot at the Kensington Town Hall June 9 – 24.
- Coming up: RoundHouse Theatre presents August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned from June 7 through July 2.
