Weekend Planner, June 9 – June 11 (VIDEO)
The Silver Spring Blues Festival kicks off Sunday, June 11 at El Golfo Restaurant, continues Monday through Friday with nightly performances at Veterans Plaza, and culminates in a day of entertainment on two-stages Saturday, June 17.
Here are some of our picks for arts and entertainment this weekend:
Art:
- Strathmore Mansion hosts two new exhibits opening this week, Colored Pencil Society of America and Blush, with an opening reception scheduled for Sunday, June 11 at 2 p.m. Both exhibits are on display from June 10 through August 6.
- The Rockville Art League Juried Members’ Show is on exhibit at Glenview Mansion from now through June 28.
- Gallery B‘s June exhibit features work by the Bethesda Painting Awards finalists. The exhibit is on display from now through July 1. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m.
- BlackRock Center for the Arts’ Elsewhere exhibit features acrylic paintings by Mike McConnell and is on display through June 10.
- The Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association presents a collection of multimedia works at Kentlands Mansion through July 7. This is a juried exhibition.
- The “Modern Surrealists” exhibit is on display at the Arts Barn Gallery now through July 4 and features the works of Marco Cuba-Ricsi, John Duke and Thomas Germer.
- Waverly Street Gallery’s new exhibit, Private Moments, is on display now through July 1. Meet artist Sandra Sedmak Engel Friday, June 9 at the exhibit’s opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m.
- The Glen Echo Park Partnership operates three galleries with ongoing art exhibits. Find more information about their schedule by visiting the website, here. During the months of May through September, Glen Echo hosts Art Walk on the first Friday of the month with open studios and demonstrations throughout the park. Each month the event features different activities.
Family:
- Zumba in the Park features an hour of high energy fun at the City Hall Concert Pavilion in Gaithersburg at 7 p.m. Friday evenings now through August 25. All ages are welcome.
- The Puppet Co. Playhouse production of Cinderella closes Sunday, June 11 at Glen Echo Park. The Wizard of Oz opens Friday, June 16 and continues through July 23.
- Brookside Gardens’ live butterfly and caterpillar exhibit, Wings of Fancy, runs now through Sept. 17. The exhibit will be closed during extreme heat, as the greenhouse is usually ten degrees warmer than outside temperatures.
- Montgomery Parks hosts numerous family friendly events and festivals during the summer months. For more information, visit their website, here.
- Coming up: Strathmore’s final family jazz session of the season focuses on legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald. The session is designed for 3 to 8-year-olds and and is scheduled for Saturday, June 17.
- Coming up: Imagination Stage’s production of Wonderland: Alice’s Rock & Roll Adventure opens June 21 and runs through August 13 in Bethesda.
- Coming up: Imagination Stage’s Summer Sunday Fun-days begin July 9. The workshops are designed for 1 to 5 year-olds and include dramatic play, movement, music and visual art based on a popular children’s book.
- Coming up: Adventure Theatre’s production of Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook runs from June 23 to August 14.
Theater & Film:
- Olney Theatre’s production of Proof runs now through June 18.
- The Ankh Repertory Theatre production of the musical Dreamgirls opens Friday, June 9 and continues through June 25 at Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
- The Victorian Lyric Opera Company presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville from June 9 through June 18.
- Montgomery College’s Monday Night Film Series continues Monday, June 12 with a Swedish film, The Virgin Spring. All the films in this series explore the 1960’s and are free and open to the public. Films are shown at the Parilla Performing Arts Center on the Rockville Campus.
- The British Players present the murder mystery musical, Something’s Afoot at the Kensington Town Hall June 9 – 24.
- RoundHouse Theatre presents August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned from June 7 through July 2. Take a look at this RoundHouse behind-the-scenes video, “Go Inside ‘How I Learned’ Building the Set.”
