Art:
- The Mansion at Strathmore has two exhibits on display now through Feb. 19. The La Vie en Bleu exhibit explores the color blue. The Crossfade exhibit includes works by young Baltimore artists.
- BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown has three exhibits open now through Feb. 4. Artists Julia Dzikiewicz, Linda Colsh, and Michael Fischerkeller will talk about their work and lead a tour of the three galleries Saturday, Feb. 4.
- Bethesda’s Gallery B “Local Color by the Seven Palettes” exhibit is on display through Saturday.
- Waverly Street Gallery’s “Two for the Road” exhibit features the photography of Kate Stillwell and Wil Scott. Meet the artists Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. when they talk about their work. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 4.
- The “Winter White” exhibit is on display at Gaithersburg Arts Barn through Feb. 27. The exhibit focuses on work that has little or no color.
Family:
- The Puppet Co. Playhouse production of Goldilocks for young children and their families continues at Glen Echo Park with five performances this weekend.
- Olney Theatre presents The Rainbow Fish based on the children’s book by Marcus Pfister with shows Saturday and Sunday. Recommended for ages Pre-K to 3rd Grade.
- Celebrate the Lunar New Year with artist demonstrations, crafting activities, traditional Asian music performances and martial arts demonstrations at BlackRock Center for the Arts, Saturday, Jan. 28 in Germantown. Advance registration is recommended for this free family event.
- TheatreworksUSA presents Skippyjon Jones Snow What at the Parilla Performance Arts Center, Saturday, Jan 28 at 11 a.m. This show is a musical based on the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Drawfs and is intended for families with children ages 4 and up.
- Rockville will host the city’s Lunar New Year celebration with performances, exhibits, and food, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Wootton High School.
- Coming soon:
- Adventure Theatre’s musical Ella Enchanted opens Feb. 3 at their theater in Glen Echo Park.
- Imagination Stage’s next show, The Freshest Snow Whyte, is a Hip Hop interpretation of the classic fairytale and opens Feb. 11.
Dance:
- Enjoy a night of ballroom and Latin dance fun at the Kentlands Mansion’s Winter Waltz Ball. Instructors from Two Left Feet will teach waltz, demonstrate other dances and answer questions about proper technique. Dancers of all levels, from novice to master, are welcome.
- Glen Echo Park social dances typically occur every weekend. All levels of dancers are welcome as most dances start with an introductory lesson. Find the schedule, here.
Music:
- The Chuck Brown Band plays at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club for the club’s dance night, Friday, Jan. 27. Door open at 6 with the show at 8 p.m.
- Chaise Lounge performs at AMP for the release of their newest album, The Lock & the Key, Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m.
- Comedy legend John Cleese hosts a screening of Monty Python and The Holy Grail, followed with conversation and audience questions, Friday, Jan. 27 at Strathmore. This is sold out.
- The sounds of jazz will fill the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg Saturday, Jan. 28 as saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed, pianist Mark Meadows, bassist Eliot Seppa and drummer Abinnet Berhanu perform.
- Blues guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer plays at AMP Saturday evening at 8 p.m. This performance is part of Strathmore’s Shades of Blues festival. Check out the full line-up.
- Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club host their 2nd Annual Thanks for the Memories show to honor and remember musicians who died during 2016.
- The National Philharmonic performs Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 at Strathmore Saturday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. and again Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.
Theater:
- The musical Caroline, or Change based on the book by Tony Kushner opened this week at Round House Theatre in Bethesda. Shows include Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
- Coming soon:
- The musical Sweeney Todd runs at Olney Theatre from Feb. 1 through March 5.
- Rockville Little Theater’s production of The Miracle Worker comes to the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre Feb. 3 through 12.
