  • Waverly Gallery’s Holiday Art Exhibition is on display from Dec. 6 through Jan. 7. Gallery open Friday and Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.
  • Gallery B’s Cadence exhibition features works by Kristine DeNinno, Damon Arhos, and Clare Winslow. Gallery open Friday and Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Glenview Mansion Art Gallery‘s Rockville Art League Juried Member’s Show is on display from now through Dec. 30.  The Mansion is open Thursday, Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Bright Concepts art exhibit is on display at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn from now through Jan. 1. The exhibit features the works of Mark Altrogge, Nellie Chao, Tony Glander, and Bobbi Shulman. The gallery is open Friday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m.a to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 17 from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Dance:

  • The Maryland Youth Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the Parilla Performing Arts Center in Rockville. Performances include Friday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1 and 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 and 5 p.m.
  • The Hope Garden Children’s Ballet presents A Christmas Carol at the Fitzgerald Theatre. Performances include Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1:30 and 6 p.m.
  • The Hip Hop Nutcracker re-imagines Tchaikovsky’s classic score at the Music Center at Strathmore, Friday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m.

Family:

  • The Puppet Co. Playhouse presents The Nutcracker for young children and their families. Performances include Friday, Dec. 16 at 10 and 11:30 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17 and 18 with performances at 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Glen Echo’s Adventure Theatre presents the holiday classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Performances Friday, Dec. 17 at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m., 2 and 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Blue Sky Puppet Theatre presents Rufus the Rednose Raindog at Gaithersburg Arts Barn. Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m.
  • Imagination Stage’s production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is a holiday favorite. Performances Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1:30 and 4 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1:30 and 4 p.m.

Shopping:

  • Glen Echo’s Holiday Art Show & Sale is open weekends and other select days through Jan. 8.
  • Sandy Spring Museum’s Holiday Gift Show features fine arts and crafts by the museum’s resident artists. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Music:

  • The National Philharmonic performs Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Stan Engebretson at the Music Center at Strathmore. Performances Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
  • Glenview Mansion’s Holiday Open House includes musical performances the Richard Montgomery High School Madrigals, The Encore Singers and Harmony Express. Sunday, Dec. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Landau Murphy Jr. presents his holiday show at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club Friday, Dec. 16. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Theater:

  • The Arts Barn presents Black Nativity, a unique creation by poet and playwright Langston Hughes that retells the Christmas story using dialogue, narrative, dance, pantomime, gospel song and folk spirituals. Friday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
  • Olney Theatre presents the musical Mary Poppins. Friday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
  • Paul Morella presents A Christmas Carol based on the classic Charles Dickens novella. Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:45 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 and 7:45 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
