Here are some picks for arts and entertainment this weekend:

Art:

  • Artists and Makers Studios in Rockville present new exhibits. The opening reception, scheduled for August 4 at 6 p.m.,  includes open studios, demonstrations, wine and light refreshments.
  • Strathmore Mansion’s two exhibits, Colored Pencil Society of America and Blush, are on display from now through August 6.
  • Bethesda’s Gallery B’s July exhibit, Saffron and Tea, features mixed media paintings by Saya Behman. The exhibit continues through August 5.
  • BlackRock Center for the Arts two exhibits continue through August 26. The Shape of Memories by Lori Anne Boocks is on display in the Terrace Gallery and New and Recent Sculptures by Evan Reed is on display in the Kay Gallery.
  • The “Point of View” exhibit at the Arts Barn Gallery is on display now through August 7.  The exhibit features photography by Karen Cohen, Shanelle Jacobs, Michael Kuchinsky, Thomas Marchessault, Marleen Van den Neste, and Marc Weinberg.
  • Kentlands Mansion’s current exhibit, Countryside Artisans Create, includes artwork by members of the Countryside Artisans of Maryland. The exhibit runs through Sept. 1.
  • The current exhibit at Gaithersburg’s Arts Barn, NOMA at Bohrer Park, features mixed media artwork from the NOrth MArket (NOMA) Gallery located in Frederick.
  • The Maryland Federation of Art presents Off the Wall at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda on display through August 5. This annual exhibit of 3-D sculpture features work by artists from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico.
  • The current exhibit at Rockville’s Glenview Mansion features ceramics by Brad Blair, photography by Marlene Van den Neste and Magdalena Bajll, and new art work by Jack Martinelli. The exhibit is on display through August 18.
  • An exhibit featuring drawing and sculpture based works by artists Susan Hostetler, Dalya Luttwak, and Beverly Ress titled “A Bird’s-Eye View” is on display at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery in the Silver Spring Civic Building now through August 18.

Music:

  • The Silver Spring summer concert series wraps up with the Moxie Blues Band August 3 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Plaza at the Civic Building.
  • The Bollywood Brass DC band performs in the Bumper Car Pavilion at Glen Echo Park August 3 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Cuban singer and composer Daymé Arocena performs at AMP by Strathmore August 4 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
  • The Wheaton TGIF summer concert series continue with Nightlife performing rhythm and blues and top 40 August 4 at 7 p.m. Concerts take place at the Wheaton Veterans Urban Park, 11200 Amherst Avenue.
  • The Rio summer concert series continue Friday 6 to 9 p.m. with rhythm and blues from Ro Cube and Friends and Saturday 6 to 9 p.m. with country rock from Mason Dixon.
  • Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club present a Louis Armstrong Birthday Celebration featuring Tom Williams and Sharon Clark August 4 at 8 p.m.
  • The Friday Night Live summer concert series at Rockville Town Square continue with classic rock from the Dan Haas Band. James the Stilt Walker will perform prior to the concert.
  • Bethesda’s Fridays on the Plaza free summer concerts continue with Riseband and Show performing from 6 to 9 p.m. The concerts take place at the crossroads of Old Georgetown Road, Wisconsin Avenue and East-West Highway, just outside Bethesda Metro station.
  • AMP by Strathmore presents Homeward by NPR’s All Things Considered host Ari Shapiro August 5 at 8 p.m. Homeward is Shapiro’s first solo cabaret performance.

Theater:

  • Eunice Lewis Seagraves performs Harriet Tubman: Defender at Silver Spring Library August 4 at 6:30 p.m. A question and answer period follows the 45-minute play. A second performance is scheduled August 27 at Marilyn J. Praisner Library, 14910 Columbia Pike in Burtonsville.
  • Olney Theatre’s one-man play Thurgood, based on the life of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, continues with performances through August 20.
  • Wildwood Summer Theatre’s musical Spring Awakening opens August 4 at Gaithersburg Arts Barn. Based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s 1906 play, Spring Awakening explores adolescence and sexuality. Recommend for ages 15 and up.
  • Olney Theatre’s production of My Fair Lady closes August 6.
  • The Quotidian Theatre Company presents Night Seasons at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through August 13.
  • The Puppet Co. presents Circus! now through August 27 at the their theater in Glen Echo Park.
  • Imagination Stage’s production of Wonderland: Alice’s Rock & Roll Adventure runs through August 13 in Bethesda.
  • Adventure Theatre’s production of Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook runs through August 14 at their theater in Glen Echo Park.
