WEEK 4 – Mythical Match Up Challenge
A crazy week the 4th week has been and a new start for week 5 is coming up tonight.
The stats are slowed from last week by Good Counsel having a bye in actual play – so the Week 4 standings will be delayed until after the challenge games are played on this coming weekend. That is per the rules – October 5th is the play-in game for the Mythical Match UP Challenge and will be the stats going forward for anytime that team has a future bye in actual week play.
So let’s have a quick re-cap of what happened in the two leagues
MoCo League – Seneca Valley is flying high with its performance against Quince Orchard whom forgot how to produce a balanced offensive attack. It showed this week, as QO has to await the outcome of the match-up opponent in Good Counsel to get the final week 4 stats. If DeMatha has anything to say about it – a low scoring game or Good Counsel loss could let QO squeak by on its Week 4 play. Meanwhile, in Challenge League play Churchill beat Sherwood, and NW beat up on Seneca Valley due to 421 yards of offensive prowess over its actual play opponent in Clarksburg. QO’s defense held Seneca Valley to only 192 yards. So, in Week 4 – the big winner is Northwest.
Metro League – In Match Up Challenge play the Good Counsel and Westfield outcome will have to wait this weeks (Oct 5th) statistical outcome from the Good Counsel versus DeMatha game. But looking into the crystal ball – Westfield put up some impressive offensive and defensive stats last week against actual play opponent Fairfax. I think it will be too much for GC to overcome. Stone Bridge continues to win beating up on Old Mill who failed to report any measurable stats from their win against Meade. Friendship Collegiate is on the board with a win against PG County powerhouse Wise. Quince Orchard had a challenge week bye – which was lucky for them after their poor team performance at Seneca Valley.
Retrospective: This week my complaint is with the guru’s at the Post Top 20. Recognizing that a lot of teams remain undefeated in the METRO area after 4 or 5 weeks of actual play, and that any 1-loss team should drop down in their top rankings. Subjective as it may be – teams that lose such as Good Counsel – who lost out of the area in Nevada in late August should be afforded the same logical treatment unless of course there is a bias towards – “the 4 & 5 star” individual players that make up a team or a bias towards playing local league teams – which teams like DeMatha, Friendship Collegiate, GC, and Bullis do not do. Which is one of the reasons for doing this Match UP Challenge – that is to say take out the subjective and instead inject the use of local match ups and then compare them against one another using an overall team performance rating to rank whom are the best among all challenge teams.
For Week 5 – we have the following match-ups in the
MoCo Mythical League
Northwest versus Sherwood
Winston Churchill versus Good Counsel
Bullis versus Seneca Valley
Quince Orchard has a BYE
Metro Mythical League
Stone Bridge versus Good Counsel
Friendship versus Westfield
Quince Orchard versus Old Mill
Wise has a BYE
In the Metro League Friday Night Light October 5th play – Good Counsel will be challenged against their rival DeMatha and any low scoring event here will impact their challenge partner (Stone Bridge) whom will play Langley. I suspect that Stone Bridge comes out on top here in this match up. Same goes for Westfield who travels to Chantilly in a big Fairfax County game – lots of points on the board for both teams would impact Westfield who shows defensive weakness in stopping opponents from scoring, thus Friendship who plays Silver Oak Academy will just run up the score against a weak opponent and out perform Westfield in the challenge. Lastly, QO plays Whitman, the week after their loss to Seneca Valley – Whitman will not know what hit them after this game at the Cougar Dome in Darnestown.
In MoCo League play this week features a good match up between Northwest and Sherwood. Northwest actually plays Churchill while Sherwood travels to Magruder. It’s a toss up. Next, up the Churchill versus GC challenge which for all the reasons stated above will make this a statically close game, which Churchill might just get the edge. Bullis at Seneca Valley rounds out the Week 5 Challenge match ups. Bullis plays McNamara who has many D1 and D3 players but you never know whether they will show up. Meanwhile, Seneca is on a roll and plays a weak county team in Rockville (2A). So looking ahead Bullis loses to McNamara and Seneca pounces on Rockville, Seneca comes out the big winner in the Week 5 challenge.
Here are a few photos from games I viewed last week. Richard Montgomery at Kennedy and QO at Seneca Valley.

Great pics! Interesting column. Missing having kids in high school. I can hear the QO home games from my house. Thanks for bringing me back.
