Water Main Break in Gaithersburg (Photos)
UPDATED Water has been restored to Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) customers in the West Riding community of Gaithersburg after a water main break left 185 residential customers without water for most of the day on Dec. 28.
WSSC spokesperson Kira Calm Lewis said the 12-inch water main break was reported to WSSC at 7 a.m. on Dec. 28. She said crews shut off the water at 9:45 a.m. and repairs began at 700 Diamond Drive. The roadways were passable, Lewis said.
According to Lewis, two basements were flooded by the water main break and professional crews were called in to clean up the water damage.
As for the cause of the break, she said at this time of year a break is usually attributed to the age of the pipes and the cold temperatures outside.
Late in the day, WSSC set up a water station at Diamond Elementary School where residents could obtain bottled water.
Repairs were complete by 8 p.m. on Saturday night and water has been restored to the customers impacted by the break and shutoff, Lewis said.
