Water Main Break Floods Portion of Montgomery Village Avenue
UPDATED Sept. 18, 6:30 a.m. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) crews have repaired a water main break that flooded and closed a portion of Montgomery Village Avenue between Russell Avenue and Lost Knife Road.
WSSC Spokesperson Lyn Riggins said the ten-inch break occurred at 801 Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg shortly after 6 p.m. on Sept. 17, right in front of the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Station.
Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters initially called in the break as they watched the water cover the roadway.
According to Riggins, the water main was shut down while repairs were underway and eight customers, including the Fire Station, were impacted by the break.
Riggins said she did not know what caused the break.
She said repairs generally take between four and six hours. At 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 18, WSSC reported repairs were complete.
A busy station, Piringer said firefighters were still able to run to calls by exiting the drive through station from the rear of the department while Montgomery Village Avenue was closed in front of the station. As repairs were underway, he said firefighters checked nearby fire hydrants and reported some hydrants with low water pressure.
According to WSSC, the closed portion of Montgomery Village Avenue reopened at 4:40 a.m. today.
