Twitter Reacts to Trump Climate Change Announcement
President Donald Trump’s announcement that he was pulling the United States out of the Paris climate change agreement, sparked local officials to take to Twitter:
Reneging on #ParisAccord harms our standing as a world leader, risks our economy, & threatens the world that our descendants must inhabit.
— Brian Frosh, Former Attorney General of Maryland (@BrianFrosh) June 1, 2017
President Trump's decision to renege on the Paris Accord is reckless and dangerous. #ParisAccord #ParisAgreement

Saddened to see @POTUS withdraw from #parisclimateagreement . Locally we will do what we can to advance/protect clean energy policies.

I know #MontgomeryCountyMD will join California, NYC, Chicago, Pgh and others to continue to reduce our carbon in line w #ParisAgreement . https://t.co/5stxOuxWJJ

POTUS pulling out of Paris Accords isn't leadership. It's small-minded thinking with no regard for science or for the future of the planet.

It is up to state/local leaders to sustain our progress in renewable energy, and instill the importance of environmental stewardship.

Proud of the many efforts @MoCoCouncilMD has undertaken, and as Chair of T&E committee, look forward to continuing to lead the charge.

Trump officially withdraws U.S. from #ParisClimateDeal. Catastrophic for the American people and the world. pic.twitter.com/QRB6zNLMey

Now that @POTUS has pulled the United States from the Paris accord, what can we in Maryland do to #ActOnClimate and protect our environment? https://t.co/JmuISjr2lQ

Trump leaves Paris climate pact to join Syria. We are going to fall behind other countries based on the president's bad decisions.
— Craig Zucker (@SenatorZucker) June 1, 2017
Baffling.
This is 1 of the most shockingly irresponsible policy moves in recent memory. @POTUS just abdicated US credibility. #ParisAccord https://t.co/kX6BHY9Aif
— Senator Ben Cardin (@SenatorCardin) June 1, 2017
This #ParisClimateAccord decision is not based in science, economics, diplomacy or basic facts. It's transparently political. And dangerous.
— Senator Ben Cardin (@SenatorCardin) June 1, 2017
The world must be exasperated and disappointed in our country today. #ParisClimateAgreement pic.twitter.com/td2LrBJvVs

Moreover, the American people must be exasperated.
The vast majority – including Trump voters – wanted to stay in the #ParisClimateAccords pic.twitter.com/Y3Vxpdv7zj

This is bad news for our environment and our economy. America should be a leader on combating climate change. https://t.co/Hqnt4dxjrv

Trump's climate isolationism leaves us in the rearguard of humanity, clinging to an obsolete carbon economy & ideology. #ParisAgreement pic.twitter.com/mMZw1v9HKJ

Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is shameful. Time for states like MD to step up and lead when our federal government won't.

A small city, but we're doing big things for #Sustainability. Today seems like a good day to be reminded of that! https://t.co/xODW27MPqM pic.twitter.com/CFnagzaUI8

Sen. Chris Van Hollen released this statement:
“President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement threatens U.S. jobs, economic competitiveness, and the health of our planet. By rejecting the scientific consensus that has brought nearly 200 nations together to address the immediate threat of climate change, President Trump is ceding America’s leadership in building a 21st century clean energy economy – and the jobs that go with it – to countries like China.
“President Trump is also abdicating responsibility to protect communities in Maryland and across the country from the costly threats of drought, wildfire, storms, and sea level rise. Coming on the heels of an overseas trip in which our allies questioned America’s reliability, this decision further isolates the United States on the world stage and undermines American strength. On President Trump’s recent trip to Rome, the Pope gifted him a copy of his encyclical on the moral imperative to act on climate change – the President should have read it before making this ignorant and destructive decision that will affect generations to come.”
