Town Hall Meeting in Silver Spring Talk Men’s Health (PHOTOS & VIDEO)
The Annual AAHP Community Day featured health screenings, live cooking demonstrations, group fitness, children’s activities and more. The event took place on April 18 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building.
The initiative was hosted by The African American Health Program to raise awareness about the“State of Black Health in the County.”
To kick off the community day attendees participated in the Men’s Health and Wellness 5K Walk at 7 a.m.

“We are proud of the work that the Department of Health and Human Services has done in the area of health disparity reduction initiatives that focus on the development of effective, culturally and linguistically appropriate policies and programs to improve the health and well-being of our under-served communities. Community day is an important opportunity for us to join together and enhance public education about disease prevention, healthy eating habits and the behavioral changes we can make to promote a lifetime of good health,” said Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal.

“You bring to us what you need and you take us where you need to go,” Berliner said.
According to a news release, the African American Health Program was created and funded in 1999 through the Montgomery’s Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of AAHP is to eliminate health disparities and improve the number and quality of years of life for African Americans and people of African descent in Montgomery County. Leventhal also said Montgomery County was recently ranked the healthiest county in Maryland by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, but added “as chair of the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee for more than 12 years, I am well aware of the health issues that impact many County residents.”
The health fair and town hall meeting started at 9 a.m. The event was free and open to the public.
Silver Spring Civic Building is located at One Veterans Place in Silver Spring.
