Natalie Cole videoStrathmore and Blues Alley co-present Natalie Cole on August 1 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda. Natalie Cole is a nine-time Grammy award winning singer, songwriter and performer. Her first Spanish-language album, Natalie Cole en Español, was released in June as a tribute to her father, Nat King Cole and his Spanish recordings. She will perform selections from this new album as well as fan favorites.

Selling over 30 million records worldwide, Cole rocketed to stardom in 1975 with her debut album, Inseparable, earning the singer two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Having established herself as a successful R&B artist, Cole took a risk in releasing Unforgettable…With Love in 1991, in which she re-records standards from the American Songbook previously performed by her father. The album spent five weeks at #1 on the pop charts, earned six Grammy awards including Album of the Year, and sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.

As an actress, Cole starred in director Delbert Mann’s Lily in Winter and in Walter Mosley’s Always Outnumbered. Cole played herself in the biopic, Livin’ for Love: the Natalie Cole Story. She has made more than 300 major television appearances, acting and appearing on dramas and talk shows with Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.

Cole was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2008. She underwent extensive chemotherapy treatment for the disease, and in May 2009 had kidney transplant surgery. November 2010 saw the release of Cole’s memoir, Love Brought Me Back, an open reflection on the singer’s struggle with Hepatitis C and her return to the music industry.
