Special Deputy Patrick McGann Retires After 20 Years of Living His Dream

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office celebrated Patrick McGann who is retiring 20 years since he was appointed a special deputy to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a “Good News of the Day” post on Montgomery County (MD) Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, McGann always dreamed of working in law enforcement. However, this dream was difficult to fulfill since he was paralyzed from a young age.

Joseph Dugan, a judge on the Sixth Circuit Court for Montgomery County and someone who happened to be friends with the McGann family, helped make Patrick McGann’s dream become a reality 20 years ago.

Dugan appointed McGann the special deputy of Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office; McGann was in charge of protecting Dugan on a daily basis and “maintaining order in his courtrooms.”

On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office shared a video on Facebook showing the Sheriff’s Office honoring McGann for his many years of service.

In the video, Sheriff Darren Popkin presents McGann with a certificate of appreciation, an MCSO Challenge Coin, and a set of “Official Retired Credentials.”

Popkin reads the credentials aloud when presenting them to McGann: “This is to certify that Special Deputy Pat McGann is a retired Montgomery County Special Deputy Sheriff and is entitled to all the rights and privileges conferred by law upon such retired officials.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, McGann “also assisted in the courtroom of his Father, Circuit Court Judge Terrence McGann.”

Patrick McGann is not only known for his passion for law enforcement, but also for his smile that he uses to greet visitors and fellow deputies to the Montgomery County Circuit Courthouse.

Sgt. Jim Johnson, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, told MCM over Facebook Messenger that McGann will be missed by many as he enters retirement.

“[H]e is very near and dear to each of us and we are going to miss his smiling face around the courthouse!” said Johnson.
