‘Small Town Boy’ Funk Overcomes Injuries to Have Breakout Senior Year

After a career full of injuries, Maryland running back Jake Funk is ending his college football career on a high note. And getting recognition from outside the program.
Funk overcame torn ACLs (one in each knee) the last two years to have his career year in 2020.
The senior running back and former Damascus High School star was named third-team All-Big Ten on Tuesday. Headlining the Terrapins offense, Funk leads the nation in yards per carry (8.6) and is averaging 103 yards rushing per game. The senior is on pace for the third-highest yards per carry average in program history.
“It’s meant everything to me, the five years that I’ve spent here,” Funk said. “I was a small town boy when I came here, and Maryland helped me become a man.”
Funk captained Maryland on Senior Day on Dec. 12. in College Park against Rutgers. He tallied 180 yards including a 44-yard touchdown in the Terps’ overtime loss. Earlier this season, Funk had a breakout game in a win over Minnesota, rushing for 221 yards, the 11th-most in a single game in program history.
Maryland’s final game of the season will be on Saturday at 7:30 pm against Michigan State (2-5). For Funk, it will be the last time he takes the field in a Terrapins’ uniform. “I’m very thankful for my time here,” Funk said, “and I enjoy every second I get on that field.”
