Six MCPS Seniors To Receive Gates Millennium Scholarships

MCPS SAT Score Record HighSix Montgomery County Public Schools high school seniors will receive good-through-graduation scholarships to attend any accredited college or university in the U.S. and were named Gates Millennium Scholars recipients.

According to a news release, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low-income students who are African American, American Indian/Alaska native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate education in any discipline they choose.

The program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the amount of the scholarship is based on the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses for the 2015–2016 academic year. Grants and other scholarships are also given based on funds availability.

The Class of 2015 Gates Millennium Scholars featured 1,000 students from all over the country. Six are MCPS students:

• Rhasaan T. Bovell, Northwood High School
• Belinda D. Azamati, Poolesville High School
• Susanqi Jiang, Richard Montgomery High School
• Blessed M. Sheriff, Richard Montgomery High School
• Hanna E. Berhane, Wheaton High School
