Montgomery County police have arrested and charged a Silver Spring man with rape and attempted murder.

According to police, 26-year-old Kevin Mendoza allegedly raped a woman outside an apartment building in the 8500 block of 16th Street in Silver Spring on Friday at approximately 11:55 p.m.

The victim was carrying items from her car to the apartment building when she noticed a man following her. The suspect grabbed her from behind and threw her to the floor as she unlocked the door to the apartment building. She resisted and tried to yell, but the suspect strangled her. He then struck her multiple times in the face and head with a closed fist and raped her, according to the police.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. Doctors told police the strangulation could have led to the woman’s death.

Through investigation, Mendoza, who was a former resident of the apartment building, was developed as a suspect.

Police arrested Mendoza in Silver Spring Monday. He was charged with first-degree rape, attempted second-degree murder, and first-degree assault.
