SHA Prepares for Snowy Tuesday Commute
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is preparing for a winter storm that is expected to impact the region early Tuesday.
Crews are pre-treating major state roads today with salt brine, which prevents the initial bond of snow and ice on the pavement. The snow is forecasted to begin as early as morning rush hour, which makes snow removal very difficult in heavy traffic. Commuters need to make alternate plans, such as delaying travel, to avoid traffic delays.
“SHA is proactively treating major roads .. and crews will be out in advance of any precipitation [Tuesday] morning,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “We remind would-be drivers to monitor the timing of the storm closely and consider delaying travel if moderate or heavy snow falls during the rush hours. If you are on the road in the storm please do not pass plows and take it slow on ice and snow.”
Additionally, frigid cold temperatures and high winds are forecasted over the next three to four days. Travelers should always have a winter survival kit that includes a blanket, a fully charged cell phone, jumper cables and a shovel and ice scraper.
SHA is reminding motorists to slow down as speed limits are established for ideal driving conditions and to clear your vehicle off completely. Should traffic signals not be functioning as a result of the storm, it is Maryland State law that drivers at all approaches to the intersection must stop as they would for a stop sign and then proceed when safe.
