Say No to Bullying: Town Hall Meeting in Silver Spring Set for Sept. 28
Parents, students, educators, and elected officials will meet September 28 at the Silver Spring Civic Center for a conversation about bullying in schools.
Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, the Committee on Hate and Violence, and Montgomery College are hosting the meeting that will feature a panel with experts ready to start the conversation about bullying, hear the community, and answer questions from attendees.
“We are working to have a town hall meeting format that allows to hear directly from individuals that had experiences,” said James L. Stowe, director of the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights.
Johnnie William III, from the National Youth Advocate, will be the moderator and discussion leader at the Sunday event.
“It is critically important that we hear and have an understand that we know what’s going on in our county,” Stowe said, adding there’s a lot of work to be done.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Residents will also have chance to share their stories, and experts will direct them to community resources if necessary.
Stowe said officials are educating children against bullying while they are in elementary schools, but the work really begins when hey are in middle school.
“Middle school is a primary target,” he said.
The official also cyber-bullying is a hot issue right now, but Montgomery County has put together a resource notebook to help families find programs and look for help.
“Once is out there, you can never take it back,” Stowe said.
The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at 1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring.
