Sandy Spring Slave Museum Honors Juneteenth with Virtual Celebration

The Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery is hosting a virtual Juneteenth celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Those who attend will enjoy special performances, and learn about the day’s significance from the museum’s team of historians. Special guests include retired NBA small forward Walt Williams and Real Housewives of Potomac star Ashley Darby, among others.

Juneteenth celebrates the anniversary of June 19, 1865, the official end date of slavery in America—though the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed in 1863, it didn’t become nationally effective until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas more than two years later announcing that the war had ended and all slaves were now free.
