Safe Silver Spring Meeting To Discuss Juvenile Justice Reform

Safe Silver Spring, a community civic group, is scheduled to host a meeting on Feb. 12, 7 p.m. at the Long Branch Community Center at 8700 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring.

Safe Silver Spring HomeKate Rhudy, project manager of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, is scheduled to discuss the recent report: “Law Enforcement’s Leadership Role in Juvenile Justice Reform: Actionable Recommendations for Practice & Policy.”

The report sets 33 recommendations to improve police relations and responses between police officers and young people, among them: building partnerships with youth and family, promoting alternatives to arrest, pathways to school completions, making juvenile justice a priority, among others. It also urges law enforcement leaders to work in collaboration with local and state officials.

Tony Hausner, chair of Safe Silver Spring, said attendees will also have a chance to ask questions and share comments at the event.

According to the civic group website, the mission of the nonprofit is to develop strategies, partnerships and goals to “keep Silver Spring a community where people can live, work, travel, shop and play safely.” Safe Silver Spring encourages citizens, community and business leaders, businesses, non-profit organizations, and public officials to take steps to reduce crime and keep neighborhoods safe.
