Rockville to Host Author of ‘Dopesick’—An Upcoming Hulu Series—for Virtual Discussion
The City of Rockville is hosting Beth Macy, author of the New York Times best-selling book “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America,” for a virtual book discussion Thursday.
In “Dopesick,” Macy investigates rural America’s struggle with the opioid epidemic for the last 20 years and what led the medical community to embrace overtreating patients with painkillers.
“Dopesick” is currently being developed as an eight-episode Hulu limited series featuring Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever, Phillipa Soo.
Montgomery College political science professor Greg Sember is moderating the discussion with Macy and audience members will be allowed to ask questions. The virtual discussion starts at 7 p.m. Thursday and anyone interesting in participating can register online.

The discussion is part of the city’s Rockville Goes Purple campaign in recognition that Septembe is National Recovery Month. The campaign aims to educate the community about the opioid crisis.
Macy says of “Dopesick” on her website, “I wrote this book the only way I knew how — by witnessing the epidemic’s landing in three Virginia communities over two decades and getting to know the people on the front lines. From distressed small communities in central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs, from disparate cities to once idyllic farm towns, it’s a heartbreaking trajectory that explains how the national crisis became so entrenched.”
