Raskin Says Congress Will Work This Week on Border Issues
About 250 Attend Immigration Solidarity Rally at Bethesda Church
Rep. Jamie Raskin said Congress would work this week on the crisis at the U.S. border with Mexico.
“The president has created chaos at the border, and we need to be addressing the humanitarian crisis,” Raskin said.
The second-term congressman spoke before an event at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda meant to show community solidarity with immigrants.
The event was scheduled when President Donald Trump announced an effort to deport millions of people would start this week. On Sunday, he said he was delaying the deportations so Democrats could negotiate changes to asylum laws.
“Two weeks and the big Deportation begins!” Trump tweeted.
At Cedar Lane, Raskin offered this rebuttal: “Generally, our community has been welcoming of immigrants and has been trying to protect them and defend them against a lot of really cruel and inhumane policies.”
About 250 people filled the church sanctuary.
An opening prayer was offered with parts read by Councilmembers Evan Glass, Andrew Friedson and Gabe Albornoz.
In addressing the church, Raskin said Congress would get people doctors, lawyers and social workers.
“We are going to turn around this dreadful idea of mass deportations and roundups around the country,” Raskin said.
