Racist Graffiti Spray Painted on Walt Whitman High School Campus

The Montgomery County Police Department was notified on Sunday, March 1, that racist graffiti containing the n-word was spray painted on Walt Whitman High School’s campus.

Walt Whitman’s Principal Dr. Robert Dodd emailed a letter to parents Monday morning informing them of the incident. Montgomery County Public Schools is investigating the incident alongside MCPD.

In the letter, Dodd emphasized that Walt Whitman has zero tolerance for hate crimes. If students committed the act, they could receive charges from MCPD as well as school based consequences, according to the letter.

Walt Whitman has been working to combat hate in their community by partnering with the Defamation League to create the program No Place for Hate. According to the letter, parents at Walt Whitman have also partnered with MCPS’s Equity Initiatives Unit to provide opportunities for discussions of race and racism in the school community.

“Every student deserves to feel like Whitman is their school and is a safe and welcoming place to thrive. We remain steadfast in our commitment to create a positive school culture and we value your continued support,” wrote Dodd.
