Proposal to Name Media Center at GHS
The new Gaithersburg High School will open its doors for students in August 2013. The principal, Dr. Christine Handy-Collins, has received a proposal from community member and parent, Ms. Kathleen Lloyd, to name the Media Center at GHS the Steve and Laurie Augustino Instructional Media Center.
Steve and Laurie Augustino have been involved in the school system since their only child, Melissa, walked through the doors of Goshen Elementary School more than 20 years ago. Steve and Laurie have worn many hats including PTSA member, PTSA president, MCCPTA Cluster Coordinators, CIP Chairperson, Area Vice President for PTSA, GHS PTSA Building Committee Chair, GHS Parent Construction Liaison, and more. They have spoken before countless Board of Education and County Council budget hearings, CIP meetings, public hearings and forums.
It is widely due to their steadfast leadership, dedication, energy, and talents that the new high school facility is under construction. Additionally, they were essential to the establishment of the Gaithersburg High School Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the educational and developmental opportunities for GHS students and staff. Mrs. Augustino currently serves as the President of the foundation. They have worked tirelessly with community businesses, leaders, and residents to advocate for the entire Gaithersburg school community and other MCPS schools.
Following MCPS guidelines for naming a portion of a school, a committee of stakeholders (community leaders, students, teachers, and parent representatives) has been established by the principal to review the proposal and process. The committee will meet in May to review any further community feedback and submit a final proposal to MCPS leadership. Your feedback may be submitted to the principal at Christine_H_Collins@mcpsmd.org or via postal mail to Dr. Handy-Collins at Gaithersburg High School 314 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 by May 8.
