Man Charged With Kidnapping 80-Year-Old Potomac Woman
A man has been charged with home invasion and kidnapping a 80-year-old Potomac woman.
Police said Robert Dove, 39, went to the victim’s home on Oct. 14, and stated that he was there to inspect the roof of the woman’s home. When she began to question Dove, detectives said he shoved and entered the woman’s home where he produced a knife, and demanded money and jewelry. The victim gave Dove cash and a piece of jewelry but Dove requested that the victim drive to an ATM and get more money.
Not knowing how she would get out of the situation is what led the victim to spark conversation with Dove. The suspect told her his name and stated that he was currently participating in a pre-release program. He explained that he had left the center and not returned as required so he would be wanted by the police for leaving the program.
Detectives said she suggested the two go for a drive in her car. The suspect agreed and instructed the victim to drive to a farm in Poolseville to show her a farm where he used to hunt.
After driving to the farm, police said the victim told Dove that she was hungry. During the investigation, the victim explained to detectives that she wanted to get to a place where she was around other people.
Once Dove and the victim finished their meals, Dove suggested that the they return to the victim’s residence.
Fearing what actions he might take at her home, the victim said she would pay the bill for Dove to stay at a hotel. Dove agreed, and the victim paid for a 3-night stay in a hotel located on Rockville Pike. The suspect instructed the victim to drive straight home and to call him once she got there.
Detectives said the victim drove to a friend’s home and told the friend what had occurred.
During the time that Dove was with the victim, a warrant was issued for his arrest for second-degree escape for violating his pre-release agreement. On Oct. 15, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Dove was staying at a hotel in Rockville. Sheriff deputies located Dove at the hotel that the victim paid for before taking him into custody.
Officers from the Montgomery County Police Department received a call from the 80-year-old victim reporting what had occurred.
Dove was interviewed by detectives and confessed to the home invasion and kidnapping of the victim. He was charged with home invasion, armed robbery, first-degree assault, and kidnapping.
