Police Warn Residents of Bitcoin Blackmail Scam
Montgomery County police are warning residents of a bitcoin blackmail scam which has been reported in other parts of the county and is now happening in Montgomery County.
According to a Facebook post, the police are responding to reports of scammers sending an email or mailing a letter to County residents demanding payment in bitcoins. The author of the email or letter threatens to reveal a secret to the victim’s spouse if the bitcoin payment is not made.
The police urge any individual or organization that receives a similar email or letter to call the police non-emergency number at 301.279.8000 and to not respond to the email.
