Guaymar Cabrera-Hernandez, 24, of Hyattsville, was charged on Aug. 21 with armed carjacking, armed robbery, and first-degree assault.

Police said, around 1:40 p.m., on Aug. 17, Cabrera-Hernandez found a 38-year-old woman sitting in her car in the Islamic Education Center parking lot on Montrose Road in Potomac.

The woman told police she saw Cabrera-Hernandez enter the parking lot. She then lost sight of him. Moments later, Cabrera-Hernandez approached her lowered driver’s side window with a knife and brick. He put the knife to the victim’s throat and demanded she get out of the car, police said.

The victim told investigators as she got out of the car, she moved away from Cabrera-Hernandez who threw the brick at her and then drove from the parking lot.

According to a news release, Cabrera-Hernandez left the detention center wearing clothing that matched the clothing description the victim gave to police. The woman also identified Cabrera-Hernandez from a photo, police said.

On Aug. 19, Montgomery County Police responded to a call at River Road and Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda to assist the United States Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department for a report of a vehicle that had been carjacked from the District of Columbia and had fled into Montgomery County.

The suspect was identified as Cabrera-Hernandez. During a police chase, the suspect took off into the woods and crossed the D.C. line, where police took him into custody, police said.

According to police, Cabrera-Hernandez admitted to the Potomac carjacking incident. He remains in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department.
