Police Arrest Man Charged with Murder in Fatal Bethesda Fire

Police arrested and charged Daniel Beckwitt, of Bethesda, with second-degree murder.

A  man has been charged with murder after a house fire in Bethesda that killed 21-year-old Askia Khafra, police said.

Montgomery County Police officials said Daniel Beckwitt, 27 of the 5200 block of Danbury Road, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.  According to police, Khafra died as a result of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries in Beckwitt’s Danbury home.  Fire officials discovered Khafra’s body on Sept. 10 in 2017 after responding to a house fire.

Fairfax County Police Department and the United States Marshals Service assisted in the arrest of Beckwitt. He remains in the custody of Fairfax County officials awaiting extradition to Montgomery County, according to the police.
