Overall Crime Down 13 Percent in Takoma Park
For the first six months of the year, overall crime in the City of Takoma Park decreased by 13 percent, according to a news release.
There were significant declines in assaults, burglaries and auto thefts.
Theft from auto, however, is up 44 percent and the department is looking into ways to address this issue.
“We currently have a theft from auto summer initiative underway [titled], ‘if they see it, they can steal it,'” Acting Police Chief Richard Bowers said in a statement. “We have officers in cars, on foot and on bikes participating in this initiative to remind residents to remove all valuables from vehicles.”
Despite the decline, the police department cautions residents to remain committed to their safety by reporting all crimes and suspicious activity to the police.
