One Man Arrested as Two Try To Rob Silver Spring Family

A 25-year-old man has been arrested by Metropolitan Police Department officers after a robbery and shooting that took place in Silver Spring, according to a statement from Montgomery County police.

Marlo Jenard Johnson, who has an unconfirmed address, is in the custody of Metropolitan Police and will be charged with three counts of armed robbery and three counts of first-degree assault by the Montgomery County Police Department via an arrest warrant, Montgomery County police said.

The incident started about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 9300 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring, the statement said. The family’s 51-year-old son was driving one car and the 53-year-old daughter and the 77-year-old mother were driving another. They were returning home from a convenience store the family owns in the District.

As the mother and her daughter left their car, they were confronted by two men, both armed with handguns, police said. A struggle ensued. As the son came to help his mother and sister, he was pushed to the ground and shot in the leg, police said. The men stole the women’s purses, which contained cash proceeds from the business and personal property, and fled in a black Nissan Sentra, police said.

Detectives believe Johnson and his partner targeted the family, knowing they owned the store and that the victims would possess business proceeds, police said.

Silver Spring District officers arrived at 1:36 a.m., police said. They rendered first aid to the son, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Because of the proximity of the robbery to the District and Takoma Park, and the possibility that the men may have fled there, Montgomery County police informed the two police departments of the men’s physical and vehicle descriptions, police said.

About 2 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers found a black Nissan Sentra driving on New Hampshire Avenue in the area of Eastern Avenue in Washington, occupied by two individuals matching the description of the robbers, police said. MPD officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the men fled, police said.

Metropolitan Police officers apprehended one of the men, who was later identified as Johnson. The other man has not been apprehended, police said.
