Officer in ‘Critical Condition’ After Medical Emergency in Wheaton
Police say that a Wheaton district police officer suffered from a medical emergency while responding to a report about a theft at the Westfield Wheaton Mall.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, according to a tweet from Montgomery County Police Department. Officer Rick Goodale, a spokesperson for MCPD said that officers received reports of a shoplifter at Westfield Wheaton Mall.
Upon arriving at the scene, Goodale said the person suspected of shoplifting ran from the scene. According to police, while chasing after the alleged shoplifter, one of the officers suffered from a medical emergency and collapsed.
Police say that the other responding officers “immediately began administering first-aid to the downed officer.” When Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene, police say they continued providing care and transported the officer to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.
The officer is in “critical but stable condition,” police say.
NBC4 reports that the officer “was conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital.”
The alleged shoplifter was also arrested by other officers, said NBC4.
