O’Donnell’s Restaurant Closing on July 27 (Photos & Video)
How many restaurants can you name that have served customers for over 90 years?
Dating back to 1922, O’Donnell’s Sea Grill has done just that, first in Washington, D.C. then in Bethesda, and today in the Kentlands community of Gaithersburg.
The family-owned restaurant, with the nautical theme, has been a traditional place to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and other milestones for generations of Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County residents.
But as MyMCMedia’s Sonya Burke reports the popular place — known for its crabcakes, lemon pie and rum buns — will close its doors for good on July 27.
As you just heard, O’Donnell’s owner Bill Edelblut said he’s exploring some retail ideas for the rum buns (and other products), such as grocery stores and/or even a food truck. We’ll keep you posted on any developments on that front so you will know how to find those rum buns.

More reaction to the O’Donnell’s closing news from Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce President Marilyn Balcombe:
We are really sorry to be losing O’Donnell’s. The have been Chamber members ever since they moved to Gaithersburg. It was a huge favorite around our office and we often went around the holidays for lunch and rum buns. I think it is also a great loss for Montgomery County, especially the Upcounty where we have very few locally owned restaurants. We are surrounded by chain restaurants and O’Donnell’s was something special.”
