New Stores Slowly Filling Vacancies at Bethesda Row
Bethesda Row is seeing some significant additions as some of its long-term vacancies are being filled.
Clothing boutique Anthropologie will replace Bethesda landmark Barnes & Noble, which closed in January after 20 years of selling books there.
Around the corner on Woodmont Avenue, signs reading “Coming Soon: Philz Coffee” hang inside the windows of Vino Volo wine bar, which closed in December 2017.
A new Fish Taco restaurant location is under construction where Vino Volo neighbors Cosi and Secolari, closed in 2016 and 2017 respectively, once stood. Fish Taco is relocating from its nearby location at 7015 Wisconsin Ave. to this one on Woodmont.
Furniture store Urban Country moved from its location on the corner of Bethesda Ave. and Arlington Rd next door to 7121 Arlington Rd, finally filling the space left by retailer City Sports, which filed for bankruptcy in fall of 2015 and closed all its stores shortly afterwards.
Urban Country’s move made space for the new Amazon Bookstore which opened in June.
Other vacancies, however, have yet to be filled.
Independently owned Bethesda Pet closed in 2016 after 25 years on Elm St., is still for lease.
The space Noodles & Company occupied on Elm St. is still empty after the restaurant location closed in April 2017. It is moving to Congressional Plaza in Rockville.
Earlier this year Spring Mill Bread closed after 25 years on Elm. St. and Lebanese Taverna closed after a decade at the corner of Elm St. and Arlington Rd.
Ministry of Supply, a men’s clothing store which opened on Bethesda Ave in 2016, closed quickly and quietly in June. A building permit taped to the window indicates upcoming alterations to the store front and interior.
