Wondering how to entertain your children during winter break? Here are some suggestions:

1)     Tackle a project you’ve been putting off with them (i.e., cleaning their room, reorganizing their closet)

2)     Plan “fieldtrips” to local museums such as The Air and Space, Spy, Crime and Punishment, Newseum, or American History museums.

3)     Take a day trip to places such as Annapolis, Richmond, Frederick, or West Virginia.

4)     Have a game day at home. Pull out board games and spend time as a family playing a variety of games. If needed, keep score and lay out prizes, but make sure there are multiple prizes given for different things so that all children receive one.

5)     Have a movie marathon. Have the family gather in front of the television and watch multiple movies from a series (i.e., Harry Potter), or let each family member pick a movie. Microwave or cook popcorn and other snacks, and make it a movie day at home.

6)     Go skiing at one of several places within about an hour’s drive of Washington, D.C.

7)     For children who get bored easily sitting at home, work collaboratively and create a schedule with them for the day (i.e., video game time, reading for fun, getting ahead on homework assignments).

8)     If you want something low key and need a change of scenery from your home, consider taking your children to the library for a few hours and having them read, or even play on a laptop or iPad.

I hope these suggestions are helpful.  Have a wonderful winter break and holiday season!
