National Cathedral Joins Chorus Criticizing President
The National Cathedral in Washington added its voice to the critics who have excoriated President Donald Trump for his tweets and statements against four congresswomen of color and against the city of Baltimore.
“As faith leaders who serve at Washington National Cathedral – the sacred space where America gathers at moments of national significance – we feel compelled to ask: After two years of President Trump’s words and actions, when will Americans have enough?” reads a 670-word statement from the cathedral posted Wednesday on its website.
Titled “Have We No Decency? A Response to President Trump,” the post condemns Trump for the “racialized” language he uses in his tweets.
“Make no mistake about it, words matter. And, Mr. Trump’s words are dangerous,” the post says.
The post is authored by The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington; the Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of Washington National Cathedral; and the Rev. Canon Kelly Brown Douglas, canon theologian of Washington National Cathedral.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Budde objected to Trump’s reference to Baltimore as a place where no human being would want to live.
“We wanted to say that this has crossed a line that was truly worthy of a point of collective protest,” Budde said.

Chartered by Congress in 1893, the cathedral is an Episcopal church although it considers itself “a house of prayer for all people.”

The cathedral has held funeral services for four of the last five Republican presidents: Eisenhower, Reagan, Ford and George H.W. Bush.
