Movement Grows to Change Name of White Flint Metro to North Bethesda Metro

Friends of White Flint are asking Montgomery County to rename the White Flint Metro Station to the North Bethesda station “to reflect the community’s preference, history, and redevelopment plans,” wrote Executive Director Amy Ginsburg.

In a letter to Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Andrew Friedson, Friends of White Flint explained that following a public meeting and other discussions, a consensus was reached to call the metro stop on Rockville Pike North Bethesda. Even some who preferred other names said they could support calling it North Bethesda, noted Ginsburg, in a blog post on the nonprofit’s website.

More than 60 residents and business owners attended a virtual meeting March 31 with Elrich, Friedson, the Greater Bethesda Chamber and Friends of White Flint. While several names were suggested, including North Bethesda White Flint and Pike District, a consensus was reached favoring North Bethesda.

Friends of White Flint decided to support the name North Bethesda while still opting to call nearby areas Pike District, White Flint of North Bethesda, Rose Village or Pike & Rose of North Bethesda, according to Ginsburg’s blog.

“North Bethesda builds on the national visibility and prestige of Bethesda, making it easier to attract businesses, residents, retailers, residents, and financing to our community,” Ginsburg wrote. “The name North Bethesda both builds on the great history of our community and portends a grand future for our neighborhood.”

Friedson previously explained that the next step is to weigh the options and then speak with the county executive staff. If the county decides it wants to change the station name, it must then make a request to Washington Metropolitan Area Authority Transit. The county will seek state funding to help offset the cost, he said.

Visit Montgomery and Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation also support the proposed name change.
