More Than 4,000 Pounds of School Supplies Donated From MCPS Students and Staff (VIDEO)

Montgomery County Public Schools partnered with Learn Shop, Inc. early Monday for the 18th annual Drive for Supplies event at Richard Montgomery High School.

Dozens gathered in the school’s cafeteria to pick up crayons, pencils, paper and more for students and families in need.

MCPS students and staff donated supplies after cleaning out their lockers and desks at the end of the school year.

More than 4,000 pounds of supplies was donated this year.

“When you think about our elementary schools in Montgomery County, 41 percent of students are identified as living in poverty,” Dr. Jack Smith, superintendent of schools, said. “That’s four out of 10 elementary schools.”

Over the last 18 years, MCPS has donated more than 90 tons of school supplies.

“This event reflects the genuine generosity and compassion of the student body,” said Matthew Post, Student Member of the Board of Education.   “There’s so much supplies and so much passion from the student volunteers here.”
