Riemer Files for Re-Election to Montgomery County Council (VIDEO)
Councilmember Hans Riemer filed for a third term on the Montgomery County Council, completing paperwork at the county Board of Elections on Wednesday.
We asked him about what he plans to do for the next four years, and what he considers his accomplishments for the last eight years. Here’s what he said:
Riemer was an early proponent of efforts to expand the county’s nighttime economy. He said the effort brought better restaurants and a high quality of living in the county’s urban settings.
“I think if you go to Silver Spring or Bethesda, it’s a very different county than it was two, three years ago,” Riemer said.
The county has created a “brewery scene” with locations in the Ag Reserve, downtown Silver Spring and industrial parks in Rockville.
“There’s a feeling we’re on the right track. I’m pleased with where we’re headed,” he said.
Riemer, 44, of Takoma Park is opting to use the public election fund, where candidates can supplement small donations from donor with money from a county fund. At-large candidates, like Riemer, can leverage 250 contributions, none more than $150, totaling $20,000, into $250,000 from the county.
Riemer said he has 340 donors, and collected between $23,000 and $24,000.
“It’s a terrific way to run for office, and I think over time it’s going to revolutionize politics in Montgomery County. It means the grassroots are the most powerful path to elective office,” he said.
