Montgomery Hunters Kill 530 Deer in First Week of Firearm Season

Hunters harvested 530 deer from Montgomery County during the opening weekend of the 2017 Maryland firearm season, according to figures provided by the state Department of Natural Resources.

The two-week firearm season started Nov. 25 and runs through Dec. 9.

Across the state, 13,514 deer were killed, DNR said.

The excellent weather and the ability to hunt on Sunday contributed to the harvest, Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said.

“Sunday hunting continues to offer more opportunities for family and friends to share time out in the fields and woods. At the same time the additional day of harvest contributes positively to sustainably managing deer for the benefit of all,” Peditto said in a statement.

DNR reported Montgomery hunters harvested nearly 5,000 deer during the 2016-17 season.
