A Day of Service: Jan. 20

Many Montgomery County residents are spending their day off on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day by giving back. Here’s a look at some of the Day of Service activities planned for Jan. 20 in Montgomery County:

9 – 11 a.m. — Seneca Creek Community Church, 13 Firstfield Road, Gaithersburg.  Activities include assembling move-in kits for men transitioning out of homelessness, making cards for troops and seniors, blood drive, making dog toys for animal shelters and knitting hats for the homeless.

10 a.m. – noon — Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place  Writing letters to troops, binding sketch books and journals for children in foster care, making pillows for seniors, assembling care kits for domestic violence victims and coloring diaper tip sheets for DC Diaper Bank.

1 – 3 p.m. – Service projects and volunteer fair organized by Montgomery County’s Volunteer Center at Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, North Bethesda. Activities include tying paracord bracelets for troops, making bag lunches for the homeless, assembling personal care kits for Interfaith Works’ Community Vision Day Shelter, creating fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice, making toys for animals at the County’s animal shelter, decorating holiday cards for seniors and assembling care kits for foster children.

3 – 5 p.m. — International Cultural Center, 19650 Club House Road, Suite 205, Montgomery Village.  Making sandwiches and packing healthy snacks for homeless, pack bags of cereal for Women Who Care Ministries’ program, packing food for Nourish Now, creating inspirational flags and cards and packing toiletry kits for homeless.

Manna Food will be holding food drives at the following Montgomery County Giant food stores: White Oak, Blair Park, Cabin John, Montrose Crossing, Georgetown Square, Germantown Commons, Flower Hill, Potomac Promenade, Kentlands and Shoppes at Traville.  Non-perishable food items, as well as sleeping bags, blankets and socks, will be collected at all Day of Service event locations.

 

20th Anniversary Annual Tribute and Musical Celebration:

3 – 5 p.m. — The Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman La., North Bethesda. 

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee celebrate Dr. King’s birthday. The musical celebration will feature DC area and national recording artist and saxophonist Brian Lanier; the Washington Dunhuany Guzheng Academy performing a musical selection and dance, “Jubilation;” the Takoma Academy performing a musical composition; and several solo musical performances. The 2014 recipients of the Children of the Dream, Humanitarian and Literary Arts Awards will be announced.
