Montgomery College to Host a Conversation About Human Rights

Montgomery College is scheduled to host on Dec. 10 a community forum in observance of International Human Rights Day.

The “People of Color and the US Criminal Justice System” conversation will be moderated by Alonzo N. Smith, professor of African American History at Montgomery College.

“The main goal is to present some perspectives on the issues raised by Ferguson and related events. We want to present different viewpoints, including law enforcement, human rights officials, and college administrators,” Smith wrote in an email to MyMCmedia.

The free event will take place on Montgomery College Rockville Campus at 51 Mannakee Street, inside the Theatre Arts Building.

“The idea for this forum originated with the Montgomery College Peace and Justice Studies Community. We recognize the need for law enforcement in any society, and at the same time we also recognize the need for all parties to strive as much as possible to resolve differences through nonviolent means. Laws must be enforced, and members of the community must work together to enforce those laws,” Smith wrote.

– David Smith, Rockville Human Rights Commission

– Laura White, Organization Development Specialist at Montgomery College
