Middle School Creative Writers Celebrate Diversity (Photo)
Friends of the Library, Montgomery County are recruiting schools to participate in the 2015-2016 MOSAIC middle school student writing contest. The first teacher info session is scheduled for October 6.
Last year’s winners were announced over the summer. Celebrating heritage and cultural differences, Montgomery County middle school students were honored for their award winning poems, essays and short stories all told from the heart.
Friends of the Library, Montgomery County announced the winners and honorable mentions of the 2014 – 2015 Mosaic: Celebrating Diversity through Creative Writing contest. The 18 students are from middle schools across Montgomery County. They are:
Isabella Artino (Lakelands Park), Sam Bai (Robert Frost), Arya Ghorpade (Lakelands Park), Hannah Ho (Lakelands Park), Gabriel Hudson (Francis Scott Key), Emily Kombe (Takoma Park), Catherine Lo (Takoma Park), Daniela Moreira (Julius West), Alexia Moser (Earl B. Wood), Selva Ozer (Ridgeview), Marjori Ramos (Francis Scott Key), Anika Seth (Takoma Park). Emmy Song (Robert Frost), Meili Soriano (Lakelands Park), Jasmine Tran (Lakelands Park), Nafisat Uddin (Argyle), Angela Wu (Robert Frost), and Emily Zhao (Roberto Clemente).
The program focuses on culture and diversity and the theme is incorporated into the school system’s existing language arts curriculum. Winners and honorable mentions are selected from each grade level and for each entry type: poetry, essay and short story.
An anthology of the works has been professionally published and made available at every MCPL branch and MCPS middle school media center. It may also be purchased through FOLMC by calling 240.777.0020.
